TFT LCD Display: Thin film transistor liquid crystal display (TFT LCD) is a variant of liquid crystal display (LCD). It uses thin-film transistor (TFT) technology to enhance image quality. It is the most common display technology used in mobile phones. It offers better image quality and higher resolutions as compared to earlier generation LCD displays. The only limitations are narrow viewing angles and poor visibility in direct light or sunlight. Further, large TFT displays consume more power and hence, are not battery-friendly. As this display technology is cheaper to manufacture, these are most commonly found on budget phones, feature phones and low-end smartphones.

IPS LCD: IPS (in-plane switching) LCD offers better display quality than normal TFT LCD display. It offers wider viewing angles and consumes less power, which in turn gives a much improved battery life. This technology is costlier than normal TFT LCD and hence, is found only on high-end smartphones. Apple uses a high resolution (640x960 pixels) version of IPS LCD in its iPhone 4, which is also called Retina Display because of its excellent picture quality.

Google Voice pulled from App Store following iOS 5 crash

What once was there now is gone. Yesterday, Google Voice was just two clicks away in the iOS App Store. Now, all that remains is a page cache (at the source link below) and versions of the app that were already installed on iPhones and iPod touches. Vincent Paquet, Senior Product Manager for Google Voice confirmed that the app had been pulled, explaining "our last update of this week had a bug that caused the app to crash at sign in.

We removed it so it did not affect additional users until the fix gets published." We've been using the most recent version -- 1.3.0.1771 -- on an iPhone 4 running iOS 5 without issue, but recent reviews cite the reported crashing, so it's definitely affecting at least some users.

We don't have an ETA for when you can expect the app to return, so if you don't already have it installed, you'll need to hang tight for the time being. The service should function normally otherwise, assuming your phone number has already been registered, though you won't be able to begin new text threads or make outgoing calls using your Google Voice number.

Sony Ericsson shifts to smartphones

Mobile phone maker Sony Ericsson will focus entirely on the booming smartphone market, going head to head with rivals like Apple and underlining the importance of a tie-up with Sony amid reports the electronics giant is preparing a buyout. The company said on Friday it would shift all its production to smartphones during 2012 as it reported a swing back to profit of 31 million euros, just higher than forecasts. It said it expected more margin pressure, partly due to a global slowdown. "If the consumer confidence problem continues it will hurt the mobile industry," CEO Bert Nordberg said in an interview.

Last week, a source with direct knowledge of the matter told Reuters Sony was in talks to buy Ericsson's 50 per cent stake in the joint venture. In the Reuters interview, Nordberg declined to comment. Analysts believe the world's ninth largest handset maker can only succeed in attracting avid gadget users away from its rivals by being fully integrated into Sony's wide portfolio of devices and getting access to the Japanese electronic giant's entertainment assets, like PlayStation and music catalogues.

Smartphones currently account for around 80 per cent of all Sony Ericsson's sales and the company said its share of the global Android-based smartphone market during the quarter was approximately 12 per cent in volume and 11 percent in value. "Speculation persists that Sony will buy out the JV," said Geoff Blaber from CCS Insight. "This is arguably the most desirable endgame for a company that needs full access to Sony content and services."

Controlling Sony Ericsson would help Sony recoup ground in the battle against Apple Inc and Samsung Electronics, where it has been hampered by a disjointed strategy regarding mobile gadgets and online content. For Ericsson, a sale would insulate its profit and loss account from the volatility Sony Ericsson has brought and allow it to focus resources on loss-making chip venture ST-Ericsson. A Reuters poll put the price of Ericsson's 50 per cent stake in Sony Ericsson at around $1.5 billion.

Software giant Microsoft has bought Internet communications company Skype for $8.5 billion in its largest ever acquisition deal, Microsoft said Friday. Samsung loses Dutch bid to ban Apple products

A Dutch court on Friday turned down Samsung Electronics' request for an injunction against all of Apple's mobile products that use 3G telecommunications technology, denying it revenge over a similar move by Apple. The two technology giants have been locked in an acrimonious battle in 10 countries involving smartphones and tablets since April. Four patent infringement cases launched by Samsung against Apple were filed in the Netherlands alone.

A court in The Hague on Friday dismissed Samsung's claims of patent infringement by Apple, scuppering its bid to ban the sale of iPhones and iPads in the Netherlands. It also rejected Apple's counterclaims in the case. "A win for Apple but also relief for the industry because the judge upheld widespread understanding of fair, reasonable, and non-discriminatory (FRAND) terms in the use of patents," independent intellectual property expert Florian Mueller said.

On Friday, the Dutch court found that Samsung's 3G patents were part of essential standards which should be open to license under FRAND and that the two companies should negotiate an agreement. The ruling is a blow to Samsung, which has filed patent-infringement claims in France and Italy in order to ban the sale of the iPhone, just as Apple has started marketing the latest edition of the popular gadget, iPhone 4S.

"Apple will be taking French and Italian translations of the Dutch ruling with it. This makes it a long shot for Samsung that it could win an injunction in the EU based on its 3G patents," Mueller said. Apple has filed its own lawsuits in several countries, arguing that Samsung's Galaxy line of mobile phones and tablets "slavishly" copied its iPhone and iPad.

Earlier this month, Samsung was forced to upgrade three of its smartphones to get around temporary sales bans on earlier versions of products that a Dutch court said violated an Apple patent.

Apple Inc's latest iPhone looks set to become its bestselling device ever, and one reason appears to be disenchantment with rival smartphones. Nearly one in four people who thronged Apple stores from Tokyo to San Francisco told Reuters on Friday they were ditching BlackBerries, discarding Nokias or even giving up Google Android-based phones, hoping for something better.

The majority of the 127 iPhone 4S buyers polled informally by Reuters in the United States, Japan, Australia, France, Germany and Britain were Apple diehards upgrading their devices. But 28 claimed they were making a switch, with some saying they were disillusioned by Research in Motion after this week's global BlackBerry outage that enraged millions. "I was with Nokia before, but I guess they've sort of lost their way in terms of the interface and everything. Plus, most of my friends use Apple," Myles Geissler, 25, said while shopping for an iPhone in Sydney.

Apple had already pre-sold over a million during the first day it went live on the Internet - a week before it hit stores selves in seven countries on Friday. RIM's BlackBerry and smartphones by manufacturers such as Nokia - which abandoned Symbian and will this year unveil devices based on Microsoft software - have been losing ground to the iPhone, which is facing a serious threat only from Android phones.

The new phone looks similar to the previous iPhone 4 but has a faster processor, better camera and a voice-activated software dubbed "Siri", which lets users ask the phone questions and helps in logging calendar items. "I am going into fashion and it's like the official phone of the industry. Also, I am tired of the Blackberry issues, like stuff going down every six months," said fashion publicist Adam at the Times Square store.

RIM's share of the global smartphone market fell to 11.7 percent in the second quarter, from 13.0 per cent in the first, according to Gartner analyst Ken Dulaney. Android's share rose to 43.4 per cent from 36.4 per cent, and Apple's rose to 18.2 percent from 16.9 per cent. Sprint reported record single days in the United States for any device - by 1 p.m. "We are seeing a nice mix of people who are first-time smartphone purchasers as well as those who are switching from competitors," said Verizon spokeswoman Brenda Raney. Away from the notoriously fickle consumer-gadget marketplace, Apple also appears to be making strides.

Apple appears to be a winner when workers get to pick their own phones, in a trend known as the consumerisation of IT. Companies can save money when they let employees buy their own phones and pay their own monthly bills. An Aite Group poll of 402 wealth managers conducted before the outage found that 45 percent would choose an iPhone or iPad, compared with 14 percent for a BlackBerry. "Siri is pretty amazing. With Android, you have to memorise commands. I don't understand why it can't be on all (Apple) phones," said James Thompson, who had braved the six-hour drive from Los Angeles to San Francisco just to get in line - overnight - with his brother.

BlackBerry outage could accelerate shift to iPhone

John Stuart has been chained to his BlackBerry for years, first as a systems manager for Wall Street bank Morgan Stanley and then as chief information officer for Beverly Hills Wealth Management. But this week, Stuart ordered an iPhone from Apple Inc, ending his 7-year relationship with BlackBerry maker Research in Motion. His move highlights how even security-conscious banks and IT managers, who have been among RIM's most loyal customers, are starting to defect, lured by improvements in rivals that challenge the BlackBerry's much-vaunted safety features. "RIM has always been at the top of their game when it comes to device management. Apple has caught up," Stuart said.

The BlackBerry has been losing ground in the business market to the iPhone and, to a lesser extent, devices running Google Inc's Android software, as companies gradually allowed their employees to choose their own mobile devices. This week's massive BlackBerry network outage, which spanned four continents, is likely to speed up RIM's decline, analysts said.

Many banks already allow employees to choose their devices and the BlackBerry outage is likely to push more in that direction, according to Julie McNelly, an analyst with Aite Group, who advises financial institutions on data security. "The barn door is already open. Most of the horses are already gone," she said. "This could potentially accelerate the process."

The BlackBerry used to own the corporate market because companies believed RIM was best at protecting enterprise data and prevent the theft of corporate secrets. The outage highlights RIM's Achilles heel: the fact that all BlackBerry messages are routed through its own data centers means information is more secure, but it also creates a single point of potential failure. Messages sent through phones from Apple and other vendors do not travel through any central network, so they do not have that same weakness.

While that has meant rival phones were less secure in the past, many security experts say the iPhone has caught up to the BlackBerry, thanks to improvements in Apple's latest iOS software. And for Android phones, a proliferation of third party security software have also helped. "In most ways, iOS is at least as secure as BlackBerry, namely in malware prevention, exploit prevention, etc.," said Charlie Miller, principal research consultant with Accuvant and a highly regarded expert on mobile security. He said the BlackBerry is still superior in data encryption and manageability, but added that "reliability obviously is a problem recently for Blackberry."

Google Buzz to be closed down by Google

Google Friday announced to shut down the highly-controversial social networking product Google Buzz, along with several other services in the coming weeks, Xinhua reported. Google on its official blog, Google announced the death penalty to its code search engine, Buzz, Jaiku which let users send updates to friends, the Google personalised homepage feature iGoogle, and the University Research Program for Google Search.

The shut-downs came as part of Google's housecleaning effort announced in early September, in which the company said it will shut down a number of products and merging others into existing products as features. "Changing the world takes focus on the future, and honesty about the past. We learned a lot from products like Buzz, and are putting that learning to work every day in our vision for products like Google+. Our users expect great things from us; today's announcements let us focus even more on giving them something truly awesome," said Google in the blog post.

Google Buzz, a social networking and messaging tool integrated into Gmail service, has been widely criticised for privacy concerns and held back the search giant from expanding its businesses to the social networking space. After Buzz, Google launched Google+ in June, which has been receiving a good response and passed the 40 million user mark, the company's chief executive officer Larry Page said Thursday.

Long-awaited iPad app finally released by Facebook

Facebook released its long-awaited iPad app on Monday and introduced support for social games on the mobile versions of its online service. The dual announcements plug two key holes in Facebook's product offerings and could provide a way for Facebook to generate revenue from the more than 350 million users who access its service on mobile devices every month.

Facebook said that the mobile versions of its website will now offer tighter integration with third-party social games and applications. Those games, such as Zynga's Farmville, are extremely popular among Facebook users who access the service on their PCs. Similar to the experience on a PC, Facebook users on mobile devices such as Apple's iPhone and Android smartphones will receive alerts in their newsfeed when their friends play certain games or invite them to play along with them.

Facebook's mobile service will also offer bookmarks within the website of a user's favorite games, for quick access. Many of those games offer users the ability to purchase virtual goods - such as additional equipment or clothing to enhance the experience in a game - using Facebook's special so-called Credits currency. Facebook takes a 30 per cent cut of the revenue from those transactions.

The company said it would require third-party app developers to support Credits in the mobile versions of their games that interact with Facebook. The rule only applies to games aimed at users of the Facebook website developed using HTML5 technology and accessed through a standard browser. Facebook said the specialised iPhone app version of its service would not support its Credits currency, in accordance with Apple's terms of service.

The new version of Facebook for Apple's popular iPad tablet has been rumored on industry blogs for months. Facebook said the iPad app will offer enhanced photo-viewing capabilities and messaging capabilities.

Email services restored : BlackBerry

The maker of BlackBerry said Monday that email services have been restored on many of its smartphones, after an unexplained glitch cut off Internet and messaging services for large numbers of users across Europe, the Middle East and Africa. However, Research in Motion Ltd. said that some customers may continue to experience delays with instant messaging and browsing services.

"Our technical teams are working to return services to normal operation as quickly as possible," the company said in a statement. "We apologise to our customers for any inconvenience, and we will continue to provide updates as new information becomes available."

The problems first appeared to crop up at about 1000 GMT (6 a.m. EDT). RIM did not give an explanation for the glitch, but some telecommunications companies in the Middle East and Europe laid the blame at the Canadian company's door. Khaled Hegazy, Vodafone Egypt's spokesman, said "there is a problem with the servers in Canada which is affecting service" in the region.

The extent of the outage wasn't clear. Vodafone UK said that customers across Britain appeared to be unable to access BlackBerry Messenger, a free-to-use instant messaging program which has helped make the handset popular with young people.

Across the affected regions, BlackBerry Internet access appeared to be sporadic. Some users were able to send and receive messages, while others using the same service provider couldn't. Among the companies reporting problems were Qtel Qatar, Etisalat in the United Arab Emirates, Dubai-based Du, Zain Kuwait, and the Bahrain Telecommunications Co.

The outage occurred as RIM's co-CEO Jim Balsillie and other executives were in Dubai for the annual GITEX electronics show. Balsillie earlier in the day unveiled a new service at the show that will soon let users of some of its latest BlackBerry phones share documents, web links and other information with others by tapping their smartphones together.

Wal-Mart and Facebook unveil partnership

Wal-Mart Stores Inc and Facebook Inc unveiled a partnership on Tuesday to help the world's largest retailer connect customers with its local stores. Wal-Mart launched My Local Walmart, a page that lets the retailer's roughly nine million Facebook fans follow what is happening at stores in their neighborhoods.

Wal-Mart is stepping up investments in e-commerce and social networking to try to compete more effectively with Internet rivals led by Amazon.com Inc.

The effort covers about 3,500 Wal-Mart outlets and will send alerts to the company's Facebook fans about new products and discounts, the companies said. "With early Walmarts, customers would walk in and ask the store manager to get a product," said Stephen Quinn, chief marketing officer of Wal-Mart. "This is going to allow this kind of communication at national scale. Stores become more relevant on a local level because of interaction with customers."

Facebook fans of Wal-Mart who sign up to the new page will get about two messages a week from their local store at first, Quinn added. Alerts may be triggered by local events such as a high school football game or weather, he said. "A national message is sometimes not relevant," Quinn said. "We can now say we have sunscreen in the south and snow boots in the north."

My Local Walmart also will have a role in this year's holiday shopping season, especially on the day after Thanksgiving when shoppers line up early for deals, he added. Shoppers will be able to download maps of their local store from My Local Walmart, showing them where specific merchandise will be in their store. "It's impossible to put out a generic map," Quinn said. "This allows us to put out store maps for each local store."

The event will be held at an outdoor amphitheater at Apple's headquarters in Cupertino, California, on Wednesday, October 19, Cook said in the memo, a copy of which was obtained by Reuters.

"Like many of you, I have experienced the saddest days of my lifetime and shed many tears during the past week," Cook said. "And I've found comfort in both telling and listening to stories about Steve."

Jobs died last Wednesday at the age of 56 after a long battle with a rare form of pancreatic cancer.

NYSE: Hacker threat to NYSE website comes to nothing

A reported threat from an activist hacker group to take protests against Wall Street to the Internet by crippling the New York Stock Exchange website appeared to come to nothing on Monday. A spokesperson for NYSE said there was no interruption to web traffic and no sign of a hacker attack, although some media outlets reported that the exchange's website slowed for some minutes shortly after 3:30 p.m. "There was no service interruption," said NYSE spokesman Ray Pellecchia.

Pellecchia said the period from 3:35 p.m. to 3:37 p.m. - reported in some media as the time when the disruption took place - had been checked. He said there was no sign of an attack on the site. A video, posted a week ago on Youtube supposedly from a hacker group called Anonymous, threatened to attack the NYSE website: "On Oct 10 the NYSE site shall be erased from the Internet," the video said.

The threat was made against the NYSE website not the trading platform, which is used to process billion of share transactions each day. It was not possible to verify the origin of the threat. Anonymous, reported to be a loose-knit group of hackers, has attracted the attention of law enforcement agencies and media in the past for its protest attacks on corporate and government websites.

The publicised action against the NYSE website was intended as a show of solidarity with the Occupy Wall Street movement that is holding a running demonstration in Zuccotti Park near the NYSE building in Lower Manhattan. So-called hactivists use distributed denial of service (DDOS) attacks, in which they get supporters to crash the websites of their targets by overwhelming the servers with traffic.

The Anonymous group launched DOS attacks against Visa and MasterCard because the group thought the companies were hostile to Wikileaks and its founder Julian Assange.

Research in Motion executive confident about

Research in Motion Ltd. is "absolutely confident" in its PlayBook tablet despite disappointing sales and aims to appeal to customers already hooked on its BlackBerry smartphones, a company executive said Monday. Patrick Spence, RIM's managing director for global sales and regional marketing, told The Associated Press in Dubai that the Waterloo, Ontario-based company was not as clear as it could have been in defining the target audience for the devices.

RIM's focus now, he said, is on trying to convince to existing BlackBerry users to consider the PlayBook. It plans to announce new features and functions for the computers soon. "We still could've done a better job of appealing directly to those BlackBerry customers," he said, adding the company is now and "trying to approach more of them."

The company's focus, he said, is on "targeting the 70 million BlackBerry subscribers around the world, and saying: 'this is the tablet for you.'" RIM's earnings fell by nearly half in the last fiscal quarter as it sold just 200,000 PlayBooks - far fewer than it and analysts had been expecting. The lackluster sales have weighed on RIM's slumping share price, which has lost about two-thirds of its value since February.

The company faces stiff competition from Apple Inc.'s iPad, by far the biggest-selling tablet computer. Apple sold almost 29 million iPads from April 2010 through June of this year. Amazon.com Inc. is also getting into the tablet business. It recently unveiled the Kindle Fire, a tablet computer that is listed at $199, making it cheaper than either the PlayBook or the iPad.

Separately, Spence said RIM is committed to rolling out higher-end phones using its new QNX software sometime in 2012. He declined to specify how soon they would be on store shelves. "Getting it right trumps saying it's going to be 'X' date. ... I want to make sure we get it right," he said.

Spence was in Dubai along with RIM co-CEO Jim Balsillie to attend the city-state's annual GITEX electronics show. Balsillie used his appearance at the show Monday to showcase the company's commitment to the Mideast and unveil a new service for the BlackBerry OS 7 operating system known as BlackBerry Tag. It is designed to allow users of some of its latest BlackBerry phones to share documents, web links and other information with others by tapping their smartphones together. Balsillie didn't take questions from the audience and dodged reporters' queries after his speech.

The Mideast is an important market for RIM. BlackBerrys are the top selling smartphones in Saudi Arabia and the United Arab Emirates, the two biggest Arab economies. Spence said he believes that regulatory concerns which threatened to shut down BlackBerry services in both countries last year are now behind the company. RIM was able to resolve government watchdogs' concerns through "education and engagement," and not through concessions like installing BlackBerry servers in the countries, he said.
