Google Revamped Gmail Mobile with New Features

Gmail LogoGoogle revamped the mobile version of its Gmail which gives the Gmail mobile a fresh look and feel especially on smaller screens. Google did this with the use of eight different CSS3 transitions and JavaScript. The new gmail mobile looks like an installed app.

Email messages can now be manually refreshed with a down pull- a feature similar to Twitter’s own drag-down approach. Gmail team modified the inbox navigation with new sliding transitions, and enlarged the graphical interface, taking full advantage of that Retina Display.

The changes introduced in Gmail mobile are the following:

  • Pull down to refresh: You can now pull down to refresh your message list and conversation on all iOS and Playbook devices. To refresh, simply touch the message list, drag downwards and release.
  • High resolution icons: For those of you using Gmail for mobile on an iPhone 4 Retina display, the icons and graphics are now at a higher resolution, making Gmail for mobile sharper.
  • Transitions: When you tap on a conversation, tap back to the inbox, go to the menu or go back, the view will slide left or right. This new transition animation is a quick, small indication that makes the view change feel smoother.

India, U.S, U.N Targets of Biggest Ever Cyber Attack

In the biggest ever series of cyber attacks uncovered to date, hackers were found to have broken into networks of the Indian government, United Nations and US defence companies, with security experts pointing to China as the culprit.

Targets for the intrusions in a five-year campaign covered 72 major organisations around the world, including the governments of India, U.S., South Korea, Vietnam, ASEAN, IOC and the world anti-doping agency, The Washington Post reported, quoting a McAfee report. The networks breached included U.N. secretariat in Geneva, a U.S. Energy Department lab and 12 major U.S. Defence firms engaged in top secret futuristic weapons system.

McAfee vice president Dmitri Alperovitch said

“We were taken aback by the audacity of the perpetrators. What is happening to all this data is still largely an open question. However, if even a fraction of it is used to build better competing products or beat competitors at key negotiations, the loss will represent a massive economic threat”.

Google Voice-Based Gmail Calling Service Now Available in 38 Languages

Google expanded Gmail calling capabilities in 38 new languages which makes calling from Gmail more accessible to consumers worldwide, especially those outside of the US and those who don’t primarily use English. You can now buy calling credit in your choice of four currencies (Euros, British pounds, Canadian dollars or U.S. dollars) and there are no connection fees, so you only pay for the time you talk.

Google integrated its Google Voice phone-management technology into Gmail last August, allowing U.S. users to make calls.

gmail-callsGoogle also lowered calling rates to over 150 destinations around the world. For example, it’s now only $0.10 (or €0.08) per minute to call mobile phones in the U.K., France or Germany (landlines are $0.02/min), $0.15/minute to call mobile phones in Mexico and $0.02/min to call any phone number in China and India.

Google will roll out this feature over the next few days, so if it’s available in your country you’ll see a little green phone icon show up at the top of your chat list and you’ll be ready to make calls (you’ll need to install the voice and video plug-in if you haven’t already).

If you’re a Google Apps user, your domain administrator must have Google Voice and Google Checkout enabled in the administrator control panel in order to be able to use this feature.

Calls to the U.S. or Canada placed within those countries will continue to be free at least for the rest of 2011. Calls to the U.S. or Canada placed from outside these countries will be charged $0.01 per minute (or €0.01, £0.01, C$0.01 per minute).

Wikipedia says it's losing contributors

Wikipedia, the online encyclopedia that is written entirely by volunteers and allows anyone to edit its entries, is losing contributors, its founder complained Thursday.

Speaking with The Associated Press on the sidelines of the website's annual conference, Wikipedia founder Jimmy Wales said the nonprofit company that runs the site is scrambling to simplify editing procedures in an attempt to retain volunteers.

"We are not replenishing our ranks," said Wales. "It is not a crisis, but I consider it to be important."

Screenshot

Administrators of the Internet's fifth most visited website are working to simplify the way users can contribute and edit material. "A lot of it is convoluted," Wales said. "A lot of editorial guidelines ... are impenetrable to new users."

Wikipedia has more than 3 million entries but has been marred by subjective entries and pranks. Even so, Wikipedia cites studies that compare the website's accuracy favourably to more conventional encyclopedias, while other studies give it lower marks.

Despite Wikipedia's wide-reaching popularity, Wales said the typical profile of a contributor is "a 26-year-old geeky male" who moves on to other ventures, gets married and leaves the website. Other contributors leave because, 10 years after the website was launched, there are fewer new entries to add, he said.

By March, Wikipedia had about 90,000 active contributors. The goal is to tack on another 5,000 by June of next year, said Sue Gardner, executive director of the nonprofit that runs the website.

Among its steps, Gardner said the nonprofit is expanding a program that encourages university professors to assign the writing of Wikipedia entries to their students, particularly in India, Brazil, Canada, Germany and Britain.

The website has also introduced a new feature called WikiLove aimed at keeping users engaged. Visitors to the website select a graphic icon - choices include kittens, stars and the Mediterranean dessert baklava - and send it with a message of appreciation to a page contributor as encouragement. "It's like a 'like' on Facebook," Wales said.

The seventh annual Wikipedia conference, hosted this year in Israel, was attended by some 650 Wikipedia contributors and enthusiasts from 56 countries. Two contributors attended from Venezuela and Indonesia, though neither country has diplomatic relations with Israel. A Palestinian from the West Bank also attended, with Israeli military permission.

Wikipedia's leaders assured the audience that the website's reputation is strong - no longer drawing the ire of teachers and journalists claiming that its entries are unreliable.

"Making fun of Wikipedia is so 2007," Gardner said to a cheering crowd, quoting what a French journalist recently told her.

Even so, Wales said Wikipedia must be used with care.

"Particularly be careful if we say 'the neutrality of this article is disputed,' or 'the following section doesn't cite any sources.' That's probably a good warning," he said.

Nokia Siemens Networks starts cutting 1,500 jobs

Nokia Siemens Networks has begun cutting 1,500 jobs from the 6,900 staff it acquired with its $1.2 billion acquisition of Motorola's telecom network unit in April, a spokesman said on Thursday.

The spokesman said the process, which affects staff working in the GSM and Wimax technology divisions in several countries including the United States, had begun in Britain.

Nokia Siemens Networks was formed in 2007 as a joint venture of Finnish cellphone maker Nokia and German engineering group Siemens.

It has struggled for profitability amid tight spending by operators and tough competition from rivals Huawei and Ericsson.

MSI to launch sub-Rs 15,000 tablets in India

Taiwanese computer firm MSI said it would launch low cost tablets starting Rs.13,999 in the Indian market from Friday.

The tablet series - Enjoy - will include two variants - a 10-inch Enjoy 10 for Rs 13,999 and 7-inch Enjoy 7 for Rs 14,999.

Speaking on the company's low cost strategy, MSI India general manager Eric Kuo told IANS: "Our products do not have some prominent features such as 3G and GPS because we do not see enough market for the same in a country like India currently which reduces the cost of the products to a great extent."

"'Enjoy' series has been designed keeping the ultimate end-user in mind, it offers productivity while on the go and provides more ways to have fun and connect with friends," he added.

The android tablets are equipped with dual 2 megapixel cameras, 4 GB internal storage space micro-SD card slot (max 32 GB) and has a battery life of 5 hours.

In the burgeoning tablet market in India, MSI will have to compete with established brands such as Motorola, HTC, Apple, RIM and Samsung.

Google bringing back Realtime Search with Google+

Google will soon revive its Realtime Search feature, reports Mashable. The social media blog quoted Google Fellow Amit Singhal saying that the Google Search team was "actively working" on bringing the product back.
Singhal said that Google was also experimenting with adding data from its newly launched social networking service Google+ and other sources to Realtime Search.
The search engine giant had temporarily disabled the feature in early July soon after the launch of Google+.
Google Realtime Search allowed users to users to find real-time updates from Twitter, Facebook, FriendFeed and other social networking sites.

Cyber raids unlikely to stir faster global action

More than 30 North Korean hackers were hired to work in China by a South Korean crime ring to steal the personal data of South Korean gamers, and channelled $5 million to their impoverished country in compensation, South Korea's police said on Thursday.

North Korea has been blamed for spreading malicious computer software that paralyzed Web sites of government agencies and businesses, and for a cyber attack on a South Korean bank this year that brought down its network.

Police say the hackers, who were graduates of elite North Korean universities, could have easily broken into computer networks of agencies to steal sensitive information or spread malicious software.

Police said they had arrested 15 people in South Korea who recruited the hackers and set them up in China to break into a large South Korean online game network and steal its users' personal information.

The information was used by the South Korean ring to create virtual players whose identities were sold to online gamers who used them to improve their winnings, police said.

The hackers were paid as much as 55 percent of the revenue from the sale of the identities, and their expenses in China were reimbursed by the South Korean ring members, the police said.

The police have no plans to take steps to pursue the North Koreans, an official said.

Online security experts have discovered an unprecedented series of cyber attacks on the networks of 72 organizations globally including the U.N., governments and business over five years.

Security company McAfee said this week it believed one "state actor" was behind the attacks but declined to name it, although several security experts said evidence points to China.

South Korea has been the target of two large waves of cyber attacks on major government Web sites and business networks. Officials claim the acts of "cyber terror" originated in the secretive rival North, with which the South remains technically at war.

North Korea has denied the charges and accused Seoul of inventing a conspiracy to fuel confrontation, although a North Korean defector warned recently that Pyongyang was recruiting thousands to its cyber warfare unit.

A South Korean government task force is working on a strategy to address cyber security threats to what is the world's most wired country.

More than 95 percent of South Korean households have permanent access to the Internet, thanks to heavy government investment in networks.

Placebook??? Hang-outs could predict new online friends

A method of predicting which individuals may become friends on social networking sites based on the places they visit out in the real world has been developed by researchers at Cambridge University in Britain.

The new approach to "friend suggestions" looks at the usual haunts of individuals to determine which users may have connections with one another.

This, combined with the "friend-of-a-friend" method, currently favoured by social networking sites such as Facebook and LinkedIn, can increase the efficacy of the prediction system, say researchers.

"We wanted to investigate the properties of places that encourage connections between visitors and how this could be incorporated into a system that predicts friends," Salvatore Scellato, one of the researchers, told Reuters.

The team analysed the creation of social connections on Gowalla, a location-based social networking site that allows users to share information about the places they visit.

"We monitored the behaviour of people going to places and the connections they made. We found that lots of people who go to the same places end up adding each other as friends, accounting for around 30 per cent of new social links," Scellato said.

Meeting places are given incremental value based on how likely they are to foster connections and interaction between people, therefore offices, gyms and schools carry more weight than football stadiums or airports.

The weighting was determined according to the number people who visit the place, and the regularity of those visits - a theory Scellato describes as "place entropy."

"We considered the entropy of a place to find venues that are more likely to foster social links, such as offices and gyms, rather than train stations or museums. We discovered that two users visiting a place with low entropy, that is, a place with a handful of people who are regulars, are highly likely to develop a social connection," said Scellato.

Friend prediction systems pose a large problem to social networking sites due to the vast numbers of people they deal with. Facebook has more than 750 million active users.

"Our results show it's possible to improve the performance of link prediction systems on location-based services that can be employed to keep the users of social networks interested and engaged with that particular website," Scellato said.

Even the human bloodstream isn't safe from hackers

A security researcher who is diabetic has identified flaws that could allow an attacker to remotely control insulin pumps and alter the readouts of blood-sugar monitors. As a result, diabetics could get too much or too little insulin, a hormone they need for proper metabolism.

Jay Radcliffe, a diabetic who experimented on his own equipment, shared his findings with The Associated Press before releasing them Thursday at the Black Hat computer security conference in Las Vegas.

"My initial reaction was that this was really cool from a technical perspective," Radcliffe said. "The second reaction was one of maybe sheer terror, to know that there's no security around the devices which are a very active part of keeping me alive."

Michelle McGann wears her insulin pump to control diabetes during the second round of the Kraft Nabisco Championship at Mission Hills Country Club in Rancho Mirage, California.

Increasingly, medical devices such as pacemakers, operating room monitors and surgical instruments including deep-brain stimulators are being made with the ability to transmit vital health information from a patient's body to doctors and other professionals. Some devices can be remotely controlled by medical professionals.

Although there's no evidence that anyone has used Radcliffe's techniques, his findings raise fears about the safety of medical devices as they're brought into the Internet age. Serious attacks have already been demonstrated against pacemakers and defibrillators.

Medical device makers downplay the threat from such attacks. They argue that the demonstrated attacks have been performed by skilled security researchers and are unlikely to occur in the real world.

But hacking is like athletics. Showing that a far-fetched attack is possible is like cracking the 4-minute mile. Once someone does it, others often follow. Free or inexpensive programs eventually pop up online to help malicious hackers automate obscure attacks.

Though there has been a push to automate medical devices and include wireless chips, the devices are typically too small to house processors powerful enough to perform advanced encryption to scramble their communications. As a result, most devices are vulnerable.

Radcliffe wears an insulin pump that can be used with a special remote control to administer insulin. He found that the pump can be reprogrammed to respond to a stranger's remote. All he needed was a USB device that can be easily obtained from eBay or medical supply companies. Radcliffe also applied his skill for eavesdropping on computer traffic. By looking at the data being transmitted from the computer with the USB device to the insulin pump, he could instruct the USB device to tell the pump what to do.

Radcliffe, who is 33 and lives in Meridian, Idaho, tested only one brand of insulin pump - his own - but said others could be vulnerable as well.

Although an attacker would need to be within a couple hundred feet of the patient to pull this off, a stranger wandering a hospital or sitting behind a target on an airplane would be close enough.

Radcliffe also found that it was possible to tamper with a second device he wears. He found that he could intercept signals sent wirelessly from a sensor to a machine that displays blood-sugar levels. By broadcasting a signal that is stronger than the real-time, authentic readings, the monitor would be tricked into displaying old information over and over. As a result, a patient who didn't notice wouldn't adjust insulin dosage properly.

With a powerful enough antenna, Radcliffe said, an attacker could be up to half a mile away. This attack worked on two different blood-sugar monitors, Radcliffe said.

"Everybody's pushing the technology to do more and more and more, and like any technology that's pushed like that, security is an afterthought," Radcliffe said.

Radcliffe refused to identify any of the three device makers, in part out of concern for his own safety. He is concerned that the devices don't appear to have an easy way to be updated with new software to fix the problems. He said he intends to notify the manufacturers after Thursday's presentation outlining the weaknesses.

The hacking fears come on top of human errors and technical glitches tied to medical devices. The US Food and Drug Administration has identified software and design errors as critical concerns in investigating hundreds of deaths potentially linked to drug pumps.

FDA officials declined to comment specifically on Radcliffe's findings, saying they hadn't seen the research. But the FDA said that any medical device with wireless communication components can fall victim to eavesdropping. It warns device makers that they are responsible for making sure they can update equipment after it's sold.
